TBA fights through the field to secure 5th in Race 1 at Portimão
In a display of skill and control, race one of the 2025 FIM Supersport World Championship at the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve saw an impressive performance from Tom Booth-Amos, who started from twelfth position on the grid and battled hard throughout the 17-lap race.
Despite his starting position TBA kept his focus, riding an intelligent race with well-timed overtakes lap after lap to cross the line in fifth place. The British rider produced one of the fastest laps of the race which qualifies him further up the grid in P6 for tomorrow’s race two.
Tom Booth-Amos: I did the best that I could after we struggled yesterday and this morning so actually to come away with fifth is much better and I am very happy. I didn’t think I would say I would be happy about finishing fifth but I am really happy. Good solid points and now we need to look and try to improve again tomorrow.”
Teammate Oli Bayliss also faced a challenging start to the weekend struggling in both practice and qualifying where he secured P17 on the grid for race one. The young Australian lost a couple of positions at the start of the race but maintained his composure and fought back to finish in his starting position of P17 at the line.
Oli Bayliss: “Bit of a difficult day today. All weekend I’ve struggled with rear grip and it’s causing some weird sensations all over. We’ll make a few changes for warm-up and go from there to try and make tomorrow a better day. It’s certainly not the position I want to be fighting for but we’ll get there.”
PTR Triumph Factory Racing Team Manager Simon Buckmaster: “Qualifying was not what we were looking for but we made some changes for the warm-up and then again for the race and Tom did a really good job, he kept calm and came through the field. Today the best we could do was fifth and that’s what we have got to do if we want to win this world championship, get the maximum amount of points we can all of the time. It’s a really long, competitive championship so we will try to improve tomorrow. Tom will start from the second row of the grid so will be getting away with the leaders so let’s look and see if we can challenge for the podium. With Oli, looking at it he needs half a second a lap so we will look at where he is strong and weak compared with Tom and together as a team will work to get Oli back challenging for really good points as well and that is what we are looking at doing tomorrow in race two.”
TBA in podium return as Bayliss crashes out of race two
PTR Triumph’s Tom Booth-Amos made a thrilling return to the podium in race two at Portimão, clinching a well-deserved third place in today’s 2025 FIM Supersport World Championship race two.
Booth-Amos’ performance at the sunshine bathed Portuguese circuit was a true testament to his growing credentials as a front-runner and his efforts have once again given the team reason to celebrate. The 29-year-old now sits second in the championship with 72 points, just thirteen behind leader Stefano Manzi.
Tom Booth-Amos: “Super happy to get third today the guys did a great job to get the bike sorted and to give me the feeling that I needed to be able to fight for a podium today. Credit and thanks to them and we will carry on our championship fight.”
It was a bittersweet day for the team as in a disappointing turn of events, Oli Bayliss’ race came to an untimely end as he crashed on lap four and was forced to retire from the race. After a promising start Bayliss was positioned within the points when he crashed and any hopes of a strong finish were shattered.
Oli Bayliss: Weekend to forget here in Portimão, after a positive weekend in Phillip Island it’s not how I wanted to follow it up. Chasing more and more each session and unfortunately I hit a bump on the inside of turn 4 and had a high side just as the sensations with the bike were getting better. We need to re-set and take the positives we can bring into the next round.”
PTR Triumph Factory Racing Team Manager Simon Buckmaster: “Another great result for Tom on the podium. He’s second in the championship, we still lead the team’s championship and are second in the manufacturer’s championship. The team worked really hard and kept improving and we made another good step for race two. We are going to Assen next and we need to keep producing the results and challenging for the championship. It was a big shame for Oli, I felt that we had improved the bike for him and I truly believed he would have been in the points but he made a mistake and crashed out. He is fine and we need to get him well into the points and we will work hard and get it right with him in Assen.”
