The benefits of riding a motorbike

While we are biased towards riding a motorcycle and think it’s brilliant anyway, there are many benefits to doing so…

Filtering – beat traffic

No doubt you’ve been in your car stuck in traffic with nowhere to go. Then out of the corner of your eye, you see a motorbike filter through the traffic, you move over a little, and they disappear ahead in the queue. They will be at home eating their tea by the time you clear the traffic.

Due to a motorcycle’s compact size, they can breeze past traffic when safe to do so and get to their destination quicker.

Cheaper on fuel than a car

It understandably takes more power to move a car than a motorcycle, then when you are moving, a car usually has stuff in the boot and passengers, so as soon as you get to a hill, you have to drop a gear or two, increase the revs and therefore increase your fuel consumption. Just driving a car generally by yourself uses more fuel and with the prices at the moment, you could save a small fortune on a bike.

Exercise – keeping balance and position

Riding a bike is great for core strength with having to fight gravity leaning into corners and holding your position when braking. You can burn more calories on a motorbike than riding a bicycle.

Easier parking

A fairly obvious one, seen as you can fit a couple of bikes in a car space. Some car parks offer specific bike spaces too and are often free in pay and display car parks.

Mental health benefits

Being in the fresh air and closer to nature can do wonders. Riding a bike is more of a hobby for many people, rather than a necessity, so it’s more for enjoyment.

The intense focus of navigating and balance a bike acts like meditation, blocking out anxious thoughts.

Endorphins are released when riding, with adrenaline and dopamine triggered. These can last well after your bike is back in the garage.

Sharper focus/hazard perception

Bikers often make better car drivers due to their hazard perception. As motorcycles are harder to see on the roads, riders tend to be much better at second guessing potential issues and taking avoiding and preventative actions.

Community – bike meets and events

There are bike nights, events and meets all over the UK, some with dedicated biker cafes too. It’s a great way to meet new people. Many bikers are chatty and easily approachable and even nod to each other when passing when out and about. Plus, it’s easy to start a conversation as you already have bikes in common.
