Race One of the 2025 FIM Supersport World Championship at Motorland Aragon proved to be a difficult outing for PTR Triumph.
British rider, Tom Booth-Amos displayed pole position pace during qualifying yesterday but crashed later in the session, before being able to set a hot lap in his second stint, leaving him tenth on the grid for today’s race. In warm up this morning he was involved in an incident for which he received a long lap penalty to be taken in Race One.
Booth-Amos served the penalty on lap three, dropping to P18. Despite pushing hard, he was unable to recover his pace and crossed the line just inside the points in P15 at the end of the 15-lap contest only to receive a one position penalty for colliding with another rider during the race.
Tom Booth-Amos: ““Not the ideal day that I and the team hoped for. Unfortunately I got a long lap penalty after an incident in warm up involving another rider and then I just didn’t have a good feeling today to be able do what I need to do so we need to look at it tonight and try again tomorrow.”
Teammate Oli Bayliss endured a similarly tough day. After a crash in qualifying and continued struggles to find a good feeling with the bike, he started from 25th on the grid. The young Australian wasn’t able to make up ground and finished in 23rd position at the flag.
Oli Bayliss: “Unfortunately it wasn’t really the day we were hoping for. After the struggles yesterday they were kind of just continuing into today. It’s really hard to understand so we need to keep studying the data and try and work out what is going on. It’s hard to come away one weekend being one of the fastest guys out there and the next at the back. We will keep looking into it and do our best tomorrow.”
PTR Triumph Racing Factory Team Manager Simon Buckmaster: “Obviously not the day we were looking for. Tom has had pace all weekend, you could say the pace to challenge for the win. He crashed in qualifying yesterday, then a collison with Mahias in warm up and a long lap penalty. Obviously we will look to improve the bike but he struggled in the race. Sixteenth is just not where you need to be if you want to challenge for the top three in the championship. Oli’s not been on it all weekend, hard to understand why. He went from the back of the grid to tenth in Magny-Cours, a great ride and such good race pace which he’s had for the last few rounds, but for some reason he has no pace here. We are a great team and we will continue to work together to try to find a solution and we have to have a better day tomorrow.”
Sunday
Race Two of the FIM Supersport World Championship at Motorland Aragon delivered improved results for the team with both riders showcasing determination and speed.
Tom Booth-Amos produced a much-improved performance, climbing from 12th on the grid to finish in P7, securing valuable championship points. Although no longer in contention for the title, the British rider remains third overall in the standings underlining a strong, competitive season.
Tom Booth-Amos: “Happy enough to have salvaged seventh today. Struggled all weekend just with feeling with the bike. We need to really have a look moving forwards for Estoril because we need to improve in some areas. Thanks to the guys for all their hard work as always.”
Teammate Oli Bayliss delivered another impressive position progression in the second race and produced his fastest lap of the weekend (1’53.711). Starting deep in the pack in 25th position, he fought his way forward to cross the line in P13, well inside the points.
Oli Bayliss: “We managed to salvage a P13 in Race Two today. It was a really difficult weekend and I really struggled with feeling throughout. We made quite a big change for the race but still we need to find a little bit more. We’ll keep working for Estoril and hope we can make some more improvements. P13 isn’t our speed.”
PTR Triumph Racing Factory Team Manager Simon Buckmaster: “Not the results we expected this weekend but we definitely salvaged as much as we could in race two, both riders were better. Tom’s start wasn’t great, he was back to fourteenth and he ended up seventh, 4.5 off the win, most of that was lost on lap one. We are still third in the championship we just have to make it count in the last two rounds. With Oli, maybe he is thinking about next year, we are working hard trying to keep him but we’re not there yet and I think that affects his riding as well. Both riders weren’t themselves and yes, we improved the bike set up but the main thing we worked on between Saturday and Sunday was working to get the riders in the right frame of mind. We have to get the last two rounds right if we are to maintain third position in the championship.”
