Fantastic fifth for Booth-Amos and career best eighth for Vostatek
PTR Triumph’s Tom Booth-Amos pulled another incredible result out of a fifth row start in today’s FIM Supersport World Championship race one at Cremona.
A crash in Friday’s Tissot Superpole resulted in the less than ideal qualifying position of P14 but, making a great start, Booth-Amos had progressed to P8 by the end of the first lap of the twenty lap race. Finding a comfortable rhythm around the tight and twisting track, the British rider took fifth at the flag.
Tom Booth-Amos: “Another solid race there carrying on from Magny-Cours which obviously I am really happy about. Thanks to the team because they have worked super hard again this weekend. My feeling has just massively improved from France so we need to keep this going. The race was never going to be the easiest of races because of where I started but to move forward to fifth is pretty solid and I’m really happy with the pace so hopefully we can go a bit better tomorrow.”
There was cause to celebrate on the other side of the garage too as teammate Ondrej Vostatek begins to realise his potential with a career best finish in the first race of the weekend. Despite getting pushed back at the start, Vostatek fought back to cross the line in eighth position, his highest finish in World Championship racing to date.
Ondrej Vostatek: “I really want to thank the team and my sponsors for their support. Both riders finished in the top ten so everyone is really happy. I had a really great start but I was squeezed in the first and second corners. I was able to fight back and keep the pace until the end so for me this was a really good race and I really enjoyed it.”
PTR Triumph Team Manager Simon Buckmaster: “Really good day for the team, another top five for Tom which is fantastic but also such a big step for Ondrej, by far his best finish in World Championship racing and the first time this year both riders have finished in the top ten. I have to say congratulations to the whole team, every member of the team, it’s such a confidence boost for everyone. Tom was so close to taking fourth again and Ondrej was so close to McPhee in seventh. We are only looking at small changes for tomorrow, today I just want to thank everybody at Triumph Racing and all the people that support the team for a great result.”
Booth-Amos cracks the podium at Cremona and Vostatek in the top 10 again
It was only a matter of time and in today’s race two, PTR Triumph’s Tom Booth-Amos delivered his first FIM Supersport World Championship podium and the team’s first podium since last year with a stunning third place finish at Cremona in Italy.
Booth-Amos started from P8 on the grid for the second race and once again got a blistering start straight to P7 and, never losing touch with the leading group, was up to fourth by lap seven of the twenty lap race. On lap nine, leader Montella crashed out of the race elevating Booth-Amos into third position and, with eleven laps left to run, the British rider kept his cool, watched his back as the battle for fourth raged behind him, to cross the line and secure the podium with third.
Tom Booth-Amos: “Finally we’ve achieved a podium which is what we come here for and you know, it’s not been easy leading up to this but the last two rounds we have found a direction with the bike and working together with the guys and Triumph back at the factory it’s a massive weight lifted off my shoulders and theirs so now hopefully we can continue like this for the last three rounds.”
It was another great top ten for teammate Ondrej Vostatek in P9 and although a position down on yesterday’s race one, the Czech rider rode more consistently and finished closer to the winner than he did in race one.
Ondrej Vostatek: “The second race we ended up again in top ten and I want to congratulate my teammate Tom Booth-Amos for the podium. I think all the team did a really great job here and I am looking forward to the next three rounds.”
PTR Triumph Team Manager Simon Buckmaster: “After day one we were really pleased with the improvements and steps we made to be more competitive but what can I say about today! I am so happy for everyone in the team, a great job by Tom but I think it is important that we all understand that both sides of the garage contributed so much to this week. We had a rough start to the year but we have kept the faith, kept building and working together as a team unit. Great result today, there are three rounds to go and we are going to keep working this way. I am so happy for everyone Sarah, Kevin, Calin, Ago, Michal, George, Simon and the legend that is Devis from Bitubo, thanks to everybody, thanks to Triumph Racing I hope we are repaying all the support that you give to us and we look forward to making you more proud of us in the future. Ondrej had a better ride than yesterday, he was battling with top riders, he should be proud of himself for another great top ten result.”
