PTR Triumph’s Tom Booth-Amos delivered a career best World Supersport result in today’s FIM Supersport World Championship race two at Magny-Cours in France.
The first race of the weekend was suspended due to the sheer volume of rain on Saturday and the shortened to 12-lap race was rescheduled for the following morning in the place of the warm-up session. Whilst by Sunday morning the rain had ceased, the track was still wet in places and quickly drying in the sun which made for some tricky riding conditions. Even without good feeling, Booth-Amos still managed a solid ninth in the first race but felt that there was more to come.
Perfect weather conditions prevailed for the second race of the day and Booth-Amos got a good start off the line, gaining a raft of positions. From that point he rode a smooth and flawless 19-laps to cross the line in fourth place, his best finish to date and the team’s best result so far this season.
Tom Booth-Amos: “Qualifying was probably the best I have felt all year so I just did the lap times on my own. Race one I struggled a little bit with the feeling of the bike in the damp conditions, I just didn’t quite get the feedback I’d have hoped for but then race two was clearly the best I have felt all year riding the bike. It finally feels like it is mine. Hopefully we can continue like this and finish the year off strongly.”
Teammate Ondrej Vostatek improved hugely across the two races both in position and confidence. Vostatek couldn’t find his rhythm in the sketchy conditions of race one, crossing the line in P26. The second race was a different story with the Czech rider involved in a close four-way battle which saw him up to thirteenth by lap thirteen but he was pushed back to finish just outside of the points in sixteenth.
Ondrej Vostatek: “Overall I’m satisfied. The second race was good I felt great on the bike and was finally able to overtake. In the middle of the race something strange happened because both my front and rear wheel started to jump and chatter as soon as I got onto the straight. With sliding, this was difficult and I lost the group fighting for P13.”
PTR Triumph Team Manager Simon Buckmaster: “Race one was wet in places and drying. To be honest we are a little bit disappointed with ninth for Tom and in those conditions Ondrej always struggles. But for race two we went for the harder rear tyre, it is perfect for us and Tom rode a really good race for fourth place. We just need one more to get to the podium. I’m really happy for everyone, for all the effort the whole team put in because it’s not just about each side of the garage, the team work together as a great unit. Big thanks to everybody in the team, to Devis at Bitubo and Triumph racing. It’s a great result for us and we go to Cremona in a confident way. Ondrej just missed out on a point but he rode so much better than he did in race one and he should take that confidence to Cremona. Looking forward to the next race because they are coming thick and fast now.”
